If You Are New To Coaching

If you are new to coaching, it is nice to see how coaching, consulting and therapy align. Coaching borrows from consulting and therapy but is unique in that it doesn’t bring you the answers (consulting) nor diagnose and treat (therapy).

A Bit About Kathy

I come from 25+ years in marketing, business strategy and leadership. My experience includes working within Fortune 500 companies to venture backed startups.  Along the way I became deeply curious how organizations, teams and individuals work. What I noticed was how much suffering takes place–much of that in silence; bully bosses, dysfunctional teams and people feeling undervalued. I also noticed situations where people and teams excelled; environments where people trusted each other and individuals flourished. This led me to a Masters in Organizational Management & Design in 2002. I then began my own experiment to see what worked and didn’t. The most powerful impact I found came from when I experienced coaching, individually and as part of a team. I loved the practical and empowering approach of coaching. That’s what led me to make a career shift to full-time coaching.  In 2020 I completed my CPCC and ICF certification and opened my private practice.  I am also a certified Gallup Strengths coach and trained in Positive Intelligence and IFS coaching. In addition, I am currently pursuing a PhD in Transformative Studies focused on how we transform our relationship with work and create a path to empowerment.

I work with individuals from young adults to seasoned leaders. I also work with teams in support of conflict management, productivity, and high performance.

My goal is to help individuals to find their inner leader and work together to build their path to empowerment.

A Bit About Rachael

I believe that meaningful change starts with new awareness, and comes to fruition through strengths-based practical actions. I put my trust in the potential of people, and partner with clients in a collaborative, warm, and rigorous approach to achieve the outcomes they seek.

My current role as a coach and facilitator takes me into established organizations and high-growth startups to support leaders. I use research-backed methods I’ve gained over 20+ years studying personal and professional development to apply what’s needed in any situation. From 10 years as an educator, I meet people where they are to develop experiences that let them take hold of their own learning. Prior to my time as an educator, I spent 10 years as an executive producer of large-scale events managing complex teams, tight-timelines, and high-stakes situations. Through all of these experiences the through line was clear; success of any endeavor depends on high-functioning teams, and successful teams start with individuals.

I am certified ACC with the International Coaching Federation, CPCC with the Co-Active Training Institute and LHEP with the Human Element Model for Organizational Success. Additionally I am trained in Positive Intelligence, Gallop Strengths, IFS coaching, Playing Big, and PAX programs.

We all deserve to live a life that is balanced, fulfilling, and enjoyable; my goal is to help clients find their own way to that life.

Why Work With A Coach And Topics To Bring To Coaching

As Harvard Business Review (2021) states “There’s no question that future leaders will need constant coaching…they will be an essential part of the leader’s learning process.”  This is because our work, home and social environments are becoming more complex and people want to bring their best selves in all of their life. Plus there are new tools and insights evolving in the space of human development that are available through coaches.

People come to coaching for different reasons and some of those include development of skills in their work setting, crafting a dream direction for their life,  or addressing a specific issue they know holds them back like perfectionism. As Oprah Winfrey says “Coaching can help you stop the crazy mind chatter in your head that tells you all the time that you’re not good enough.”

Many times, clients come with something as basic as “I don’t know what is really going on but this (topic) is really bugging me.”

Six Good Reasons To Hire A Coach

1. Something wonderful has happened

Change, even for “the better” can be exciting and challenging, terrifying and disorientating. A decision in one area of your life inevitably causes ripples in others. A new job, for instance, can present new challenges, you may need to develop new skills, it also affects your relationships, and how you spend your free time.

Transitions often challenge us to re-examine our sense of who we are or the capabilities we’ve taken for granted. It can be painful to let go of what you know, especially if you feel you “should” be incredibly happy and you aren’t. Working with a coach can help you examine the constructs and inner worlds you’ve created in the past.

2. Something terrible has happened

Whether you’ve lost a client, a project  has failed, your kids are having trouble or you have a physical injury or illness, most of us want to avoid grief at all costs and attempt to force our way through these times, only to end up living with an undercurrent of resentment and depression for much longer.

Taking the time to grieve traumatic changes in your life can lessen the amount of time you spend in despair. A coach can provide a compassionate and safe place for you to grieve.

If you are dismantling the structures of home, marriage or career a coach can help you learn from your struggle to expand and move forward.

3. Nothing Is Happening

“You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.” Brene Brown.

To achieve the results you want, you will mostly need to change your attitudes or underlying beliefs. The beginning of a new coaching relationship is an ideal time to strip back accumulated layers of identity.

Fear of failing is the biggest killer of plans and ideas. More than a lack of knowledge or skill, more than the lack of a clear strategy or action plan, the biggest obstacle in the way of progress is the paralysis caused by the fear of failing, or even the fear of success.

Few people are willing to knowingly risk failure. Yet failing at any action, even failing to take action, is a rich learning opportunity.

When you feel stuck in a loop, a coach will help you dissolve self-limiting patterns and beliefs, break out of self-defeating assumptions and re-frame the competing drives which hold you stuck.

4. I want to make it happen

“Everyone needs a coach. We all need people that give us feedback. That’s how we improve” – Bill Gates

There is something in your life you desperately want but you are frozen by the enormity and implications of making such a monumental change.

You may feel like you’re clinging to the edge of a cliff where it feels impossible to either keep hold or leap off. Often self-limiting behavior shows up strongest just when you need the courage to take risks for the sake of change.

A coach can work with you to stay on track and to understand the parts of yourself  that want to sabotage your desires, plans, and dreams. The couch can help you understand these parts of yourself and  support you through the fear, resistance, and panic that can arise when you are creating something exciting and new.

5. I'm stuck

“The willingness to show up changes us, it makes us a little braver each time” – Brene Brown

You may see yourself as blocked, at a crossroads or out of options. You may feel defeated, resigned or confused and your point of view is often the main contributing factor to the blocked, stuck, or stalled way you’re feeling.

Learning how to identify, understand and dissolve painful beliefs that are running in the background can move you out of helplessness and clear up a lot of confusion.

A coach will work with you to get clear about the parts of yourself that are keeping you stuck, there is always a reason for being stuck and it is usually around staying safe. Once the reason is clear, a comfortable path out of being stuck can be created together with your coach.

Because a coach is on your side in this exploration, they can ask powerful questions that breakthrough old defenses. When you learn to be curious about your life, you will become more willing to look in the dark places and take on challenges that once seemed scary.

6. I need help figuring out “What’s next?”

Perhaps you’ve just resigned the wrong client or ended a bad relationship. Congratulations. You may not have figured out what’s next but letting go of what is not serving and nourishing you is the first step.
A coach will lead the discovery process and support you in re-organizing around a larger sense of self as you prepare for a new passage within a job or your life.
A coach will work with you to get clear about what fulfillment would be for you. In the big picture, fulfillment is about living a life that is valued, purposeful, and alive, and balance is about choosing a life that is in action, aligned with a compelling vision.
